Surinamese Kaseko Giants

The Surinamese music group Kankantrie has been a towering figure in the kaseko music scene for over 25 years. Established on June 6, 1998, by the renowned kaseko artist Marciano Wijntuin, also known as Lieve Rocky, the band has become one of the most celebrated and sought-after musical formations in both Suriname and the Netherlands.
The name “Kankantrie” itself is significant, referring to the Kapok tree, which is considered sacred by many Afro-Surinamese and symbolizes a spiritual dwelling place.
Originally from Suriname and now based in the Netherlands, the nine-member group has consistently delivered a vibrant and infectious brand of kaseko. Their music is a rich tapestry of “kaseko pur san” (pure kaseko) interwoven with “motyo poku” and “winti pogu,” creating a unique and captivating sound that resonates with a wide audience. This distinctive style has earned them the title of “King of the Kaseko-Mix.”
Throughout their illustrious career, Kankantrie has released a significant body of work, including at least 10 CDs, with some sources mentioning seven. Many of their songs have achieved immense popularity, securing top-10 positions and even number-one hits in Suriname.

Notable Albums

“Niets Aan De Hand” (2014)
“Bigi Boto” (2011/2015)
“Fosten” (2016)
“Boem Jeke Jeke” (1999/2001)
“Na Na Yepi” (Wintie Pokoe)
“Komen Jullie”
“Yu Na Ex No Klets” (2023)
“Hoe Vromer De Geest”
“I Ta Legede”
The band’s significant contributions to Surinamese music were formally recognized when they received the first-ever “Werner Duttenhofer Sranan Poku Award” from Radio 10 in Suriname.
While the founder, Lieve Rocky, has since returned to Suriname, Kankantrie continues to thrive, performing at a variety of events from weddings to large festivals like the Kwaku Summer Festival. The band’s enduring popularity is a testament to their dynamic performances and their ability to keep the spirit of kaseko music alive and evolving.
Though a comprehensive and official list of all current band members is not readily available, Murwin “Gally” de Windt has been identified as a key member.
