Balancing Books and Basketball
My Journey of Hard Work and Dedication
Every day, I wake up with a mission: to push myself further than I did yesterday. I’m a student, an athlete, and most importantly, someone who understands the value of hard work.
“Wan pikin futu e koti a kaw a wroko.”
— Sranan Tongo Proverb (Small steps can accomplish big work)
Balancing school and basketball isn’t easy—it takes discipline, time management, and a whole lot of heart. I wake up early, attend classes, complete assignments, and then hit the court for practice, games, or solo workouts. There are days when my body is tired and my mind feels overwhelmed, but I keep going because I know what I’m working toward.
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.”
— Pelé, Brazilian Football Legend
The Importance of Education
School is important to me. I want to build a strong foundation for my future, not just in sports but in life. I take my education seriously because I know it will open doors, whether I go pro in basketball or follow a different path.
“Denki na bun, ma leri moro bun.”
— Sranan Tongo Proverb (Talent is good, but learning is better)
Staying on top of my grades while managing basketball takes effort, but I’ve learned to stay focused and organized. Late nights studying and early mornings training have become my routine.
My Passion for Basketball
Basketball is my passion. It’s more than just a game to me—it’s a part of who I am. When I’m on the court, everything else fades away. I love the competition, the teamwork, and the way the sport challenges me to be better every day.
“The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.”
— Tommy Lasorda, Baseball Legend
I’ve learned how to lead, how to handle pressure, and how to keep my head up, even when the scoreboard isn’t in my favor. These lessons shape not just the athlete in me, but the person I’m becoming.
Finding Balance in Free Time
Even with such a busy schedule, I try to make time for myself too. In my free time, I like to relax and recharge. Sometimes I listen to music, watch basketball highlights, hang out with friends and play basketball with my little sister. I even play basketball with older guys from other teams.
“Tide a wroko, tamara a fesa.”
— Sranan Tongo Proverb (Today is work, tomorrow is celebration)
It’s important to find balance—to stay motivated but not burn out. Everyone needs a break sometimes, and that’s okay. These moments of rest allow me to return to my studies and training with renewed energy and focus.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
— Wayne Gretzky, Hockey Legend
Looking to the Future
This path isn’t always easy, but every step is worth it. Whether I’m solving calculus problems or perfecting my jump shot, I give it my all. I know this art of balance will serve me well throughout life.
As I look back on this journey, I’m grateful for the discipline basketball has taught me, the perspective my education has given me, and the support of those around me. Between books and basketball, I’ve found my rhythm, creating a life that’s both challenging and fulfilling.
“A no abi sondu fu fergiti, ma abi sondu fu leri.”
— Sranan Tongo Proverb (There are no mistakes to forget, only mistakes to learn from)
Tomorrow, I’ll wake up again, ready to face new challenges and continue walking this balanced path between academics and athletics.
